Why Is Plastic Bad For The Environment
Plastic bottles are used to carry or pack many products. However, many banned bags would have been reused for trash, so consumption of trash bags went up by 12 million pounds, reducing the benefit. The most common are inorganic dyes that are added to change the color of plastic bags. There are also many other single-use plastic bags left untouched by the ban, which came into force on Monday - bags containing frozen peas or cotton balls or crackers, for example.
Choosing to forgo straws, as many restaurants have begun to do, lessens the plastic waste and protects wildlife. Plastic bags floating in the ocean resemble jellyfish, one of the main sources of food for some species of sea turtles, especially the critically-endangered Leatherback turtles.
In our homes and the construction industry with items such as PVC windows and doors, in car manufacturing, in food and drinks packaging, toiletries, detergents, agriculture, gardening products, even clothing, accessories and stationery; not to mention the machinery that goes in to producing all of these items.
While better waste-management and more recycling are both imperative, the only real, lasting solution is to produce less plastic in the first place. Single-use plastic includes plastic water bottles, plastic packaging, plastic grocery bags etc. A report by the Environment Agency discovered that plastic bags (HDPE bags) are actually greener than supposedly low impact alternatives like paper bags or cotton bags (Hickman 2011).
